Matcha Tea is a very specific type of Green Tea. It is not in the usual form of tea leaves but is a finely grounded powder produced from tea leaves grown with special care and delicacy. The main difference between Matcha tea and Green tea is that Matcha tea is grown differently than regular green tea which changes the composition of its nutrients.
Matcha tea has a significantly higher amount of antioxidants as well as caffeine content than regular green tea.

Matcha also comes from the Camellia Sinensis plant just like green tea but its process of harvest is different. The green tea leaves used for matcha are grown in shade, meaning they are covered in order to prevent direct sunlight from falling on them. This increases the chlorophyll content in it, giving them a darker shade of green and causing the production of amino acids which dominates the flavour of matcha. After harvesting the leaves, they are then dried, their veins and stems are removed and are grounded into a fine, bright green powder filled with aroma. They need to be grounded carefully as if the mill stones get too warm while grounding, then the aroma of Matcha gets affected.
The process of preparing powdered tea originated in China when tea leaves were steamed and made into tea bricks for storage and trade during Tang dynasty. These bricks were then roasted, powdered and then mixed with hot water to make tea. During the Song dynasty, this method became popular. This was later formed into a ritual by Chan Buddhists. It then became an important part of Zen monasteries in Japan from the 14th through 16th centuries. Preparation and drinking of hot Matcha tea is an important part of traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. Ceremonial grade Matcha is used during these ceremonies. Matcha has become famous in almost all parts of the world now.
