Black Tea is made with the leaves of Camellia sinensis, the same shrub from which the other teas are made but it is more oxidised than other teas like green tea or yellow tea. They are then either crushed, torn and curled or are rolled by heavy machines to break them into finer particles. These are then allowed to oxidise and dry and then finally sorted into various grades based on their size. The flavour of black tea remains intact for several years and usually has stronger flavour than other teas.
It first originated in China and its name there is hong cha meaning red tea as the oxidised leaves appear red when they are processed properly. Today this tea has gained popularity across East and SouthEast Asia. It is consumed and harvested in various South Asian countries including India in huge amounts. This is highly traded. Compressed bricks of black tea were even used as some kind of currency in Mongolia, Tibet and Siberia during 19th century.
